New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) which have been unified into the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools.
New Zealand government agencies monitor the quality of all areas of the education system. This ensures students gain the skills they need and obtain qualifications that are relevant and good value for money.
The universities offer higher degree-level education. Programmes are research-led and generally academic rather than vocational. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, seven of New Zealand’s universities were in the top 100 in at least one subject.
ITPs and a few larger PTEs offer vocational degree-level education.
Entry Requirements for New Zealand

If you want to study a full-time course in New Zealand that’s longer than three months in total duration, you’ll need a student visa. Depending on your visa conditions, you may be able to work up to 20 hours a week during the term and full-time over the holidays.
Student visas to New Zealand can take up eight weeks to process. We will guide and assist you with the following steps of your student visa process :
- An offer of place from an approved education provider
- Evidence that you have enough money to pay your tuition fees
- Your passport and acceptable passport-style photo(s)
- Proof of funds – $15,000 per year, to cover your living expenses
- A copy of your air ticket home, or proof that you have enough money to buy one
- Your visa application fee
- You may also be asked to provide a medical certificate and chest x-ray, and a police certificate
